Hulu has delivered many popular and critically acclaimed shows, including The Handmaid's Tale, Only Murders in the Building, and more. And now, Hulu's latest comedy, created by Mindy Kaling, is dominating the streaming charts after its debut on June 2.
Per FlixPatrol, Not Suitable for Work is currently the No. 1 most-watched show on Hulu in the United States. The comedy is also the No. 2 most-watched show on Disney+ worldwide, becoming a global hit. Not Suitable for Work is the most-watched show on Disney+ in Australia, New Zealand, and Belgium, and reached the Top 10 in multiple other countries.
Not Suitable for Work follows an ensemble cast of young adults working in Manhattan, struggling with balancing their work and personal lives. Ella Hunt stars as AJ Pascarelli and Will Angus as Davis Beau Bradley Barrett III, two twenty-somethings working at the prestigious investment bank Fisher Stassen. Avantika Vandanapu plays Abhinaya "Abby" Chilukuri, AJ's best friend and roommate.
Meanwhile, Jack Martin and Nicholas Duvernay play Davis' friends and roommates, Josh Teitelbaum and Kel Washington, respectively. Josh is the son of the CEO of a large media company and wants to be a journalist, and Kel is a med student but wants to be an actor. Jay Ellis also stars in Not Suitable for Work as Bill Gibson, Fisher Stassen's managing director.
Davis, Josh, and Kel are also AJ and Abby's neighbors, living in the same apartment building. AJ is starting her first year at Fisher Stassen, where Davis works, while Abby works as an assistant to a celebrity stylist, Vanessa Hsu, played by Constance Wu. Other stars include Greg Germann as David Teitelbaum, Josh's father, and Victor Garber as a famous investigative reporter.
Despite the talented ensemble cast, Not Suitable for Work received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Hulu's latest comedy series holds a 50% Tomatometer score based on critics' reviews. The audience score is currently slightly more positive than the critics' score, with Not Suitable for Work holding a 68% Popcornmeter score and a 6.5 rating on IMDb.
Not Suitable for Work has been compared to the iconic sitcom Friendsfor its ensemble cast, setting, and premise. Judy Berman from TIME Magazine wrote, "The cast is relevant and the scripts peppered with internet slang. But the characters bear so little resemblance to the Gen Z we know, they might as well be at Central Perk in 1994."
Similarly, Lucy Mangan from Guardian said, "Kaling’s scripts try hard but rarely shine, let alone dazzle as the Friends’ dialogue almost unfailingly did." However, Hulu's comedy received some positive reviews as well. Jon Negroni from InBetweenDrafts said Not Suitable for Work had "a bingeworthy premiere that earns its spot on the couch while quietly daring itself to grow sharper."
Not Suitable for Work is still brand-new. The series released the first 3 episodes on June 2, and will air the remaining episodes of Season 1 on June 9, June 16, and June 23, releasing 2 episodes per week for a 9-episode season. And after all the episodes air, Not Suitable for Work might win over more viewers and become a beloved comedy.
Not Suitable for Work is available to stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
