MAXXXINE'S KEVIN BACON REFLECTS ON GOING 'FULL CIRCLE' FOR 80S-SET HORROR FILM ROLE

Kevin Bacon has appeared in dozens of roles over the course of his career, but it all began with an iconic death scene in the original Friday the 13th. Over four decades later, Bacon revisited 80s horror with his role in the new movie MaXXXine.

The third installment of a trilogy that also consists of Ti West's X and Pearl, MaXXXine brings back Mia Goth in the lead role. The film also features Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Debicki, both of whom recently spoke with CBR's Hannah Rose about the film. Because the horror movie is set in the 80s, it does make Bacon feel like he's come full circle since getting his career started with his Friday the 13th role. While Bacon admits he wasn't necessarily looking to become a part of the genre, he's since become a big fan of it, noting how that's what keeps him coming back to horror.

Horror has been a staple in Hollywood, but this past decade has raised the bar to all new heights.

'Yeah, it does kind of feel 'full circle,'" Bacon explained. "You know, I started out in horror, not because I was like, 'I gotta get into horror movie!' It was because I needed the job! I mean, literally, I was a waiter, and I wanted to do this movie – that was just because I had to. But I have come back to it again and again, 'cause I like it! I like the genre – I'm a consumer of it – and also, I like the fact that it's life and death! I like the stakes. High stakes are something that's great for an actor."

"I like the genre I'm a consumer of it and also, I like the fact that it's life and death! I like the stakes."

On the production making him feel nostalgic, Bacon added, "The fact that this takes place in 1985 is super interesting to me, because I was there! You know, I was there, in Hollywood, in that car that Maxine drives! That's what I used to rent when I came out here. I was an East Coast person, so there is something really kind of, like, trippy about this whole experience – certainly about watching the movie."

Debicki also commented on her role in MaXXXine. Offering praise to lead star Mia Goth, Debicki said how she particularly enjoyed the audition scene in the film as she "loved watching Mia work." Debicki also explained how she enjoyed her role and that it offered an "important female-to-female relationship" with the character's bond with Goth's Maxine.

Elizabeth Debicki Really Enjoyed Her Maxxxine Role

"First of all, I really just loved the role; and I understood that my piece of the story was to sort of protect and champion Mia [Goth] – you know, Maxine," she said. "I really liked playing somebody who was a kind of source of good, disguised at first – as you said, as something kind of stern, or maybe a harder egg to crack. But actually, by the end, you realize that she just actually really cares about this woman. That felt like an important female-to-female relationship – one, in the genre, and two, in the film. So yeah – I just really enjoyed it!"

MaXXXine will be released in movie theaters on July 5, 2024.
