EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2023 ACADEMY AWARDS

Oscar buzz is in the air, and plans are well underway for what the awards show will look like.

The musical performances for the ceremony by the Best Original Song nominees appear to have been confirmed for the telecast. David Byrne, Stephanie Hsu and Son Lux will reportedly appear, performing the song "This Is a Life" from the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once while Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will perform the Golden Globe-winning "Naatu Naatu" from RRR. They'll join the previously announced performances by Sofia Carson and Diane Warren for the song “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman, as well as superstar Rihanna, with her "Lift Me Up" from the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—her first Academy Award nomination. And while Lady Gaga was originally confirmed to not be performing this evening, rumor has it that she will take the stage.

Here's everything else to know about the broadcast:

All of the awards will be shown.

In November, the Academy revealed that all 23 of the award categories will be presented on air during the annual ceremony. Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told Variety, "I can confirm that all categories will be included in the live telecast." He added, "We are committed to having a show that celebrates the artisans, the arts and sciences and the collaborative nature of moviemaking. This is very much what the mission of the Academy is, and I am very hopeful that we can do a show that celebrates all components of moviemaking in an entertaining and engaging way."

In 2022, the Academy made the controversial decision to exclude eight categories, including best original score, film editing, and animated short, from the televised presentation. The choice was criticized by many in the industry for sidelining the contributions of the creators in those categories.

Who is hosting?

Jimmy Kimmel will be returning for his third stint as host of the awards show in 2023. "Jimmy is the perfect host to help us recognize the incredible artists and films of our 95th Oscars. His love of movies, live TV expertise and ability to connect with our global audiences will create an unforgettable experience for our millions of viewers worldwide," Kramer and Academy president JanetYang said in a joint statement. "With Kimmel, [producers Glenn] Weiss and [Ricky] Kirshner’s fresh perspective and masterful guidance, the Oscars will celebrate its rich 95-year history, the collaborative nature of moviemaking and our diverse, dynamic and deeply creative community of filmmakers."

"Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap," Kimmel said. "Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no."

The announcements about the telecast's host and format came after news broke earlier in 2022 that Bill Kramer planned to put more of a focus on "live TV expertise," per the Hollywood Reporter. The statement was presumed to be a nod to the fact that, for the past two years, the Oscars have been helmed by film creatives—director Steven Soderbergh and film producer Will Packer, respectively.

When are the 2023 Oscars?
