Twin Films: 25 Times When Hollywood Made the Same Movie Twice
Have you ever experienced Hollywood deja vu? The industry knows this as “twin films” or when two movies that seem identical release within a year or so of each other. Almost always, they’re not the product of “great minds think alike” or a wild coincidence. Twin films can exist when multiple production studios invest in similar (or the same) scripts, often on a topical issue. Another more nefarious cause could be employees moving between studios, taking ideas with them. Then there’s the “mockbuster,” or an intentionally bad iteration of a higher-budgeted movie, usually carrying the same aesthetic or theme. One twin typically outshines the other, and it’s not always the one people expect. We’ll compare a selection of memorable twin films using box office numbers, cast, ratings and reviews, or other considerations. If you’ve ever watched one of these and felt like you had deja vu, you’re not imagining things.
