Based on the books written by L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries aired 171 episodes throughout eight seasons from 2009 to 2017. And while it was initially downplayed as another YA adaptation, it quickly became a hit and cemented itself as one of the best teen dramas.

During the premiere of her Max show, The Girls on the Bus, which stars Supergirl star Melissa Benoist, Plec talked about her plans with the Vampire Diaries universe. During the conversation, she mentioned the novels as a possible source of inspiration, saying, “100%. Yeah, I have a story I still want to tell. I know that the people who are in the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll allow me to do it again. So, we’ll see.”

Several books in the series could provide the new story that she’s talking about. But the television series is different from the book.

While there is no official announcement that a new series would be made, Plec’s comment suggests that there is hope and potential for more to come in the franchise.

There have been a couple of spin-offs already, with The Originals and Legacies; however, those have ended, which makes another spin-off perfect. Keep checking back for more information on the new Vampire Diaries show teased by Julie Plec.
